Although I had always admired the “natural look” on other people, ironically I never felt like it was “me”. That was until my mother, who has always been an inspiration, went natural in 2004. At first, I could see that she was scared and unsure. However, as time went by I watched her go through a transition that was both physically beautiful and spiritually enlightening. It was like she was discovering herself all over again! I had to have that experience and I wanted to share it with other women. I did my big chop in 2005 and haven’t looked back since!

There was always a curly girl lurking inside. After I grew weary of my relaxer during my junior year of college, I began my natural hair journey. Six months later, on a rainy Saturday eve, I grabbed the nearest pair of scissors and started cutting every straight strand in sight. It was the most liberating experience of my life. (That and my first trip to Coldstone) I was pretty much the only chick on my campus bold enough to dismiss both the creamy crack and the “Malaysian special.” But that didn’t stop me from rocking my curls like a fierce pair of heels on a Paris runway. Eight years later and I’ve managed to make a career out of my love for beauty, and specifically, natural hair. I’d say that being kinky is one of my best attributes. *wink*

I remember thick, long ponytails and if I was good in school, bangs for church on Sunday. These were my earliest memories of being “natural”. At the age of 10, I noticed that all of my classmates were wearing their hair straight and I didn’t want to be left out. Despite her better judgment, my mother allowed me to get my hair permed and the rest was history. After 15 years of relaxing my hair, I knew it was time for a change. My once thick, long hair had begun to weaken and lose its luster. The decision wasn’t difficult to make, but the journey was another story altogether. I transitioned for 4 months and spent week after week in the salon. I finally worked up the nerve to cut it all off and haven’t looked back since! Going natural is one of the best decisions I ever made & I want to help other curly girls feel the same way!
